How to Make Fiberglass Sculptures
Step 1: Create a Design
The first step in making a fiberglass statue is to make a sketch. You need to come up with a design of what you hope to achieve. Once you have a clear idea of form and shape, it’s time to create a 3D model using modeling clay or pulp.
Step 2: Make the Mold
Creating the mold is one of the most critical stages in the fiberglass statue making process. You need to create a mold that accurately replicates the prototype or model.
You can create two main types of molds: one-piece molds or multi-piece molds.
A one-piece mold involves a mold in which the entire statue is made into one piece. This process is relatively simple, but it may not be the best choice for large or complex parts.
Multi-piece molds, involve creating molds in separate parts, which are then joined together to create the final product. Multi-piece molds are great for larger and more complex shapes because it creates more precise molds.
Step 3: Apply Resin and Fiberglass
Once the gel coat has cured, it’s time to apply the resin and fiberglass. First, apply a coat of resin to the surface of the gel coat with a brush or spray gun. Then, while the resin is still wet, apply a fiberglass cloth to the surface of the resin.
Repeat the process by adding more layers of resin and fiberglass to strengthen the statue’s structure. You can add as many layers as you want, depending on the level of strength and durability you want.
Step 4: Demolding and Finishing
Once the final coat of resin and fiberglass has cured, it’s time to demould. Carefully remove each piece of mold and what is left is the pristine fiberglass statue.

Shipping fine art sculptures
Carefully wrap the sculpture, and pay attention to delicate details. Wrap it with acid-free paper to help prevent visible aging, then use bubble wrap, Ranpak, foam, or a combination of materials to cushion the sculpture.
Once you’re done wrapping, secure it with high-quality tape.
Choose the right box size. You want a box bigger than the sculpture by several inches on all sides.
Carefully place the wrapped sculpture into the box.
Add any relevant paperwork, such as a certificate of authenticity.
Seal the box up tight.
Label it with the recipient’s address and attach any relevant signage like fragile stickers.
For an extra layer of protection, you can try double-boxing the sculpture. Pack it into a box nested inside a larger box, with more cushioning material between the two.
